The Tobacco Prevention and Education Program or “TPEP” is a local Lead Agency coordinating tobacco control efforts in Solano County since 1990. TPEP is a program of the Health Promotion and Education Bureau within Solano Public Health. TPEP focuses on these major areas:
• Countering the influence of the tobacco industry
• Reducing exposure to secondhand smoke
• Reducing the availability of tobacco
• Promoting tobacco cessation services
• Building local assets to support local tobacco control efforts.
Every three years, TPEP conducts a community-based assessment to identify the local priorities for tobacco prevention with a focus on policy and community norm change. TPEP maintains a community coalition to advise TPEP. Priorities for 2010-13 include:
• Reducing secondhand smoke exposure in muti-unit housing
• Building community assets through providing training and resources to the Solano County Tobacco Education Coalition and other tobacco prevention advocates
• Educating the public and key opinion leaders about the harmful health effects of menthol cigarettes and how tobacco companies use menthol and flavored tobacco to target youth and minorities, and thus motivate and mobilize youth groups and community organizations to support the Food and Drug Administration regulation of menthol cigarettes and the use of artificial flavorings in other tobacco products.
